I spent WAY to0 much time looking at hundreds of gadgets/widgets. They were added to my blog then I changed my mind and deleted them and added different ones. So many...just can't make up my mind. The two I decided on: Quote of the Day and Digg. Digg is the most popular news, images & videos voted on by the Digg members. I already have some of the other widgets added to my blog from the first round of 23 Things.

I have been checking in on my blog since Thing 23 but only to change my avatar and add some fun stuff over the holidays.

So I jumped right in and changed the template. But then feeling a little more creative decided to check out the section "For the Curious". WOW! Pyzam has some absolutely beautiful Blogger templates. I stumbled on one of Hawaii's most famous beaches, Hanauma Bay, Oahu. Since I had been there in 2003 & 2005, I knew I HAD to have this template especially since the temps here in MN have been stuck around -40. Looking at that beach immediately draws me back to the Hawaii sunshine and warmth...okay...back to reality and the template!

To begin with I had to copy and save each of my page elements or I would have lost them. After I saved the new template, I went back and added the page elements one by one. The header and text templates were in the middle of the page and I wanted them on the left side to leave more of the beach visible. With a lot of trial and error and help from Linda Wadman we mastered the HTML lingo by making small changes like width and positions in the header-wrapper/header-inner/outer-wrapper/main-wrapper and sidebar-wrapper. It was relatively easy because I could change the HTML, preview it, and if I didn't like the changes I clicked on the clear edits button and kept plugging along until I found the right combination and then saved the template.

I enjoyed learning about editing templates.
I'm feeling a little smarter and a whole lot warmer :)

It took me two rounds but...I finally did it!! I'm proud for learning so much and honestly would suggest to anyone, no matter what your job is, check out 23 Things on a Stick.

23 Things on a Stick was an amazing and eye opening adventure into the vast internet world. The format was informative and easy to follow and being able to work at my own pace was a plus. I like working with Flickr and the online image generators the best. As for the least, I would have to say podcast.

What I learned with 23 Things is barely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to internet knowledge. I am amazed and my head is still spinning from the 23 Things On a Stick trip I've been on.

I will try to keep current and use the information learned from 23 Things. Of course, there are the fun Things that I totally enjoyed and will use more often and then there are the other Things that I need to work on to utilize them 100%. An ongoing commitment.

Other social networks...endless. I read the articles and can honestly report there is a social network for anyone and everyone who wants to belong somewhere.

I set up an account in Ning, uploaded my picture, posted my badge and blogged. That was fun!!
I joined another social network called Bake Space that should be an interesting place for recipe discussions and an endless supply of recipes.

I have a page on MySpace and the only reason I do is to keep up with my two grandsons who have pages. I check on them about twice a month, not interested in MySpace otherwise.

Facebook is generally considered the leading social networking site among college students, faculty and staff. Facebook has become a tool in the development of college students. It allows them to express themselves, communicate and view profiles similar to their own talents and experiences. Students build connections that make them feel like they belong and are accepted.

I signed up on Facebook a couple of weeks ago. The groups I joined today are 23 Things on a Stick and Libraries Using Facebook Pages.

Podcast, a non-musical audio or video broadcast distributed over the internet. Using an aggregator or RSS feed a podcast can be syndicated, subscribed to and downloaded automatically when new content is added.

I've spent a lot of time searching for that perfect podcast and just decided to listened to MPR: Electionwise, which is a weekly podcast that presents thoughtful answers to listener questions about democratic processes, elections and voting.
I checked out Podcastalley. On the top ten list for September I wanted to listen to #9, Nobody Likes Onions. It said I had to download a podcast software so I continued and chose Primetime Podcast Receiver and after reading about it running in the background of my computer changed my mind. Already have so much loaded and slowing down my computer.

Podcasting did not interest me, maybe I'm just to excited to move on to Thing 20, 21, 22, and finally 23.

I viewed Grand March of the Librarians, (163,740 views), Angry Librarian (414,003 views), Super Librarian (15,618 views) and Librarian Lays Down the Law (16,680 Views) these were all comical and enjoyed the laugh.

Videos posted on a library Web site could show updates on new construction within a library, familiarize a patron with the layout of the library or fun workshops held at the library.

Last year when Linda (my director) showed me how ELM works and what it consisted of, I was amazed at what you could find searching the databases, Proquest, WorldCat and E-books. I think Linda uses it for ILL and I look forward to learning that complete process more in depth. These are creditable sources of information for students and teachers.

University of MN Assignment Calculator, for undergraduate students and Research Project Calculator, for secondary students and teachers (funded jointly by Minitex and MnLink) are valuable tools for research, reports and procrastinators. They offer step by step outlines according to your start and completion dates and even email reminders to keep you on track. Wish I had this when I was in school.

I was looking forward to playing games so I went to directly to Puzzle Pirates and did the bilging, learned to sail and carpentry and left with 241 gold pieces. A fine day's pirating, indeed!
Briefly checked out Info Island and Second Life, like Puzzle Pirates, they take up quit a bit of time and slowed down my computer a lot. They look interesting but I already have a busy and crazy life and do not have time for another. Maybe when I retire I will have more time to play.

Library Thing is a great way to keep track of the books you have read or plan to read. You can also see what others are reading and get their opinion, join a group on specific topics, and add the widget to your blog. This is a great way to promote new and or popular books for a reading program.

I have been using the productivity tools over the last few months and currently use iGoogle. I like it because I can add or delete what works for me. Currently I'm using the To Do list and a count down to Sept. 15, the end of 23 Things, I need to keep on plugging away...10 more things.
Backpack is a very versatile tool and would be great in an office where everyone needs to work together.

I am a news junkie therefore enjoyed checking out Digg, Reddit, Newsvine and Mixx. While they all were similar, I liked Newsvine the best, easier to scan and view an article of interest. Being aware of these tools will most likely not change the way I look for news. I like going directly to my favorite news channels.

Thing 11 is about tagging. I've created a Del.icio.us account and like the idea being able to access my bookmarks from any computer and can follow other peoples tags . I also have a Flickr account and have tagged pictures there and I'm reviewing my blogs and tagging there to. I plan on getting more familiar with the whole concept of tagging, which is another tool to stay connected with the world.

I watched the Common Craft Video on Wikis. They make learning and understanding the topic interesting. Wikis can be very informational but at the same time it makes me wonder how much is fact and how much is fiction.

After just finishing Thing 9 and working with Google Docs I see many similarities with Wikis. The difference is with Google Docs you have to be invited to collaborate and with a Wiki you are just out there for anyone in the world to edit or add information. Exciting and scary at the same time.

I think online collaboration programs are great. Another freebie at that! Nothing to download, and you can access your document from any computer with an internet connection. If you want to collaborate on a project, multiple people can view and make changes at the same time. With an on-screen chat window you can see who makes changes and when.
After reading some of uses people are doing with Google Docs I am amazed. Like tracking how many calories they consume or up to the minute with personal finances or how about taking orders to order out for lunch? You can also choose not to share your document.
With Zoho I had to register and before I even had a chance to confirm my registration I forgot my password. Duh! Google Docs seems easier to access, and work with. Google Docs gets my vote!

I made a "going away" book for a person moving to a different job using trading cards/name badges from Big Huge Lab. Everyone loved it and thought it was very creative. AND...I had a blast making it.
With a little imagination programs like Big Huge Lab, Wordle (I used our mission/vision statement) could be used to honor a top reader or to show off the best of books/magazines or events happening at the library.
PictureTrail was used to display camping with the grandchildren. Such enjoyment!

Communication is what makes the world go round and so much smaller. Email is great, sure beats telephone tag and twitter...I'm still a "new" user but find it often to busy to post to. I can definitely see the pros to twitter with short and to the point statements in 140 or less characters as to what is on your mind. Tried out instant messaging also, pretty neat but not something I would use much right now.

The pictures are worth a thousand words...

It's amazing what can be done with photos, videos (I'm working on that) and an idea.
The possibilities are endless and I plan on checking out as many as I can.

Round two, yea!
Thank you for repeating Web 2.0 tools. As you can see, I didn't get very far the first time around. I really have that time management thing going on. Maybe that is why I was asked if I would like to attend a Time Management Workshop at the Fond du Lac Community College on June 27th. And...Yes...I am definitely going.

I've been working on getting more familiar with Flickr, even signed up for a pro account. Having a place to store my pictures, (although I haven't even come close to uploading all of them) and now videos, excites me. I've mapped a couple locations in Florida that we visited in Jan. What a great way to learn geography and personalize it at the same time. I think this will interest my grandchildren.

So I've been getting ahead of myself and experimenting with the thousands of tools out there and not keeping up with my blog, but I will work on that too!

I really enjoy working (playing) with Flickr. I checked out Clemens & Alcuin libraries of College of St. Benedict & St. Johns University Flickr page and liked how they featured different books in their collections. This would be a great way to display Top Ten Books for 2007,Best Selling Books for the week, Teen Top Ten or even Oprah's Picks.

Flickr seems to be a fun yet safe way to organize and share pictures with family, friends and the whole world.

The picture uploaded was from the New York Public Library. The antique 1923 bookmobile is a perfect example for children of all ages to read anywhere & everywhere...even in the dead of winter...brrrr

RSS...Really Simple Syndication
WOW...the time spent on this THING! I started out in Bloglines and switched to Google Reader after reading an article posted by Linda. It amazes me how choosing general feeds like News, Food or Photography and literally receiving dozens of feeds at my finger tips. Not wanting to miss anything, I started reading them all until I realized I would have to give up sleeping to accomplish this feat, so I narrowed my list down to the important feeds and plan to customize my list and continue to add the necessary feeds little by little. I'm having a hard time breaking my habit of the old way of viewing information...so I'll keep working on it.
I'm excited to move on to photo sharing and editing.

Ok, so now I have watched the video a couple of times and read the articles and most likely wasted time procrastinating what I could give up in exchange while learning and hopefully continue using this ever changing technology. When learning new computer skills I can easily get lost in it for hours, which is why I have been hesitant to move on. So much to learn, so little time.

I feel Library 2.0 is a necessary tool for all professions, not just libraries. Technology is part of our day to day activities, how we utilize it and interact with the outside world such as library patrons or business customers weighs heavily on financial budgets.
